The Turkish bow
Where the Turkish bow comes from: Ottoman flight and puta bows
Ottoman archers shot for distance on the Okmeydanı, the archery field in Istanbul, and marked their record flights with stone pillars that still stand. The flight bow was built short and heavily reflexed to throw a light arrow as far as possible. The puta bow was its target cousin, which is what the Vav Tezhip is modelled on.
How a Turkish bow is built: siyahs, reflex and grip
A historical Turkish bow is horn, wood and sinew. The bows here are modern laminates of fibreglass, bamboo and maple, which cost a fraction of a horn bow. What they keep is the shape: deep reflex, short stiff tips called siyahs, and a narrow grip for the thumb draw.
Shooting a Turkish bow with a thumb ring
The arrow sits on the right of the bow for a right handed archer, and the thumb, locked by the index finger, holds the string. A brass thumb ring protects the thumb. Our stringing guide covers stringing it safely by hand.

The Turkish Sultan at 15# to 25# for most adults on a thumb ring, the Elif for a junior or a club. The comparison table puts them side by side.
